Acupressure is an ancient Asian medical practice used to heal the body by using the finger to put pressure on certain key points on the body. If you have heard of acupuncture you may ask yourself, what is the difference between acupressure and acupuncture. Basically acupressure and acupuncture are very much related. The only difference is that in acupuncture, they use needles to puncture specific key points on the body while in acupressure, one would rather use the finger to press on those same points, very gently.

Acupressure and acupuncture have been in existence for over 5000 years and even though they originate from Asia they have been spreading outside Asia to other countries. Acupressure therapy can be used to relieve pain, fortify the sexual reproductive system, detoxify the body for greater health and beauty, and tone facial and back muscles.

What are the uses of Acupressure?

Even though the term acupressure may make one think of alternative medicine, it has its application outside the field of medicine too. Acupressure can be used for beauty therapy. Acupressure is known to enhance blood circulation and improve skin tone. It is known that combining acupressure with therapeutic facial exercises can reduce wrinkles and keep the body young.

Acupressure is also used in the context of sex. Knowing where to touch can arouse more pleasure in your partner. With the knowledge in acupressure, one can know the exact points in his/her partner’s body that will arouse more pleasure. The practice of acupressure is also known to heal sexual problems such as inhibited sexual desire, premature ejaculation, impotency, infertility, and sexual frustration through an understanding of where sexual energy gets blocked and what points to use to release it.

For those who may have back problems, acupressure may help. By putting pressure on certain key points in the backbone, a lot of tension can be released. In fact acupressure and chiropractic medicine have been practiced in Asia for 1000s of years.

Acupressure is also useful in healing trauma and emotional pains. The fact is trauma and emotional stress is known to cause muscle tension. Acupressure techniques can relax those muscles and that helps in letting the bad emotions go away.

Scientific evidence

Acupressure is not recognized in the conventional medical world so there may be some doubt as to whether it works or not. That said, there are some scientific evidence that support the practice of acupressure with respect to certain specific cases.

Numerous scientific studies support the use of wrist acupressure at the P6 acupoint (also known as Neiguan) in the prevention and treatment of nausea after surgery, intra-operative nausea (during spinal anesthesia), nausea from chemotherapy, as well as pregnancy related nausea/vomiting and morning sickness. Effects have been noted in children as well as adults.

Today, there are and lot of acupuncture schools training students that are willing to learn the skill.  You can read through the articles in this blog to find out more about those schools.
